Henderson County held off the up-and-coming Lady Trojans 2-0 in the opening round of the Fifth District Soccer Tournament held at Henderson County High School.
"Just like our last game against them, we played great. We didn't back down and we certainly weren't intimidated," stated WCHS head coach Tom Welshans. "We just came up a little short offensively, but you have to give their goalie credit, she made some incredible saves."
Webster's solid defense held the strong Henderson squad scoreless, thanks to several outstanding stops by goalie Hailey Brown. The Lady Colonels got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute on a point-blank shot at the net from Leslee Poole.
WCHS put constant pressure on the Henderson defense as Keri Wright and Shawna Welshans launched attack after attack on their goal. But Henderson held off each scoring attempt.
Webster's best chance to score came midway through the second half when Wright passed to a wide-open Welshans streaking in front of the net. The WC freshman blistered a hot roller from 15-yards out but Henderson goalie Kelsey Breedlove made a diving stop to preserve the 1-0 lead.
"If we score right there, it's a whole new game. That would have really put the pressure on them (Henderson) and I would have loved to see how they would have reacted.
I really think that one goal could have been the difference for us," the WC coach added.
Welshans had another opportunity to score 10 minutes later as she broke free and dribbled deep into the Henderson box. But Brynn dossett caught up with Welshans and got a foot on the shot and it was knocked down by goalie Breedlove.
Henderson went on top 2-0 four minutes later on a shot from Kaylynn Poole that just deflected off Hailey Brown's fingertips. Webster finished it this season with a 9-10-2 mark.
"I'm truly proud of these girls and their effort this season. They continue to lay the ground work for a very successful soccer program," Welshans concluded.
