Webster County sophomore sensation Lauren Grant set a new school record of five goals in one match to lead the Lady Trojans to an easy win Saturday morning in the opening round of the Christian County Invitational.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the match, Webster accepted the challenge from the Lady Coyotes and picked up the intensity.
"They (West Creek) were very aggressive in the opening minutes and I think that really made our girls mad," noted WCHS head coach Tom Welshans. "But our girls kept their cool and responded by beating them with skill and speed."
Grant booted her first goal at the 19-minute mark to tie the game at 1-1. From that point on, it was all maroon-and-gold. Taylor Denison put the Lady Trojans on top for good with a goal four minutes before halftime.
The WCHS offense clicked on all cylinders in the second half, camping out in front of their net. Grant extended the lead to 3-1 at the 44-minute mark and then booted a 15-yarder to make it 4-1 just four minutes later. Her fourth goal came at the 52-minute mark as the WCHS rout was on.
"Lauren's play was simply outstanding and her teammates were setting her up with great scoring opportunities. And she never missed a chance to score," Welshans continued.
WC senior Keri Wright gave Grant an beautiful assist for her fifth goal at the 57-minute mark.
"Lauren is very talented and has a bright future. There will be more of these high-scoring games in her future," added Welshans.
Shawna Welshans, just a freshman, two goals late in the match and Keri Wright put the finishing touches on the victory with a goal in the final two minutes.

Revenge was sweet for the Lady Trojans as they dominated the Lady Rebels in Saturday's second tourney match. Todd had 'roughed-up' the WC girls earlier in the year with a one- goal victory. But the ever-improving Webster squad played one of its best, all-around games to easily handle Todd on Saturday.
Taylor Denison, one of the most improved Lady Trojans this season, continued her strong play on Saturday by putting WCHS on the scoreboard first with a 10-yard line drive that sailed to the back of the net eight minutes into the match. Todd tied the game 1-1, 12 minutes later but that would be as close as they could get. Welshans booted the go-ahead goal eight minutes before halftime to give Webster a lead it would not relinquish.
The strong play continued in the second half as Welshans added her second goal at the 48th-minute for a 3-1 lead. Grant continued her high-scoring day with Webster's fourth goal at the 55-minute mark and then the final score with five minutes remaining in the match.
"This was a great team effort with everyone contributing," Welshans noted. "Scoring opportunities come with great team play and unselfishness from the entire squad. Our defense was very solid which also creates momentum and confidence at the offensive end."

The Lady Trojans came up a little short against a powerful Christian County squad in Saturday's championship match. Christian took a 4-0 lead into halftime and held on for the victory.
"Finishing second in this tourney was a pretty good day's work. Everyone played very well and I'm very proud of their efforts," Welshans said. "I know these girls a looking forward to a strong district tournament effort."
