Suspected Criminal Stabs Eyewitness

Charles A. Mayes, a 28 year-old resident of Olmstead, KY, who was taken into custody after being tracked down by a KSP Canine and apprehended with the combined efforts of several law enforcement agencies, is suspected of breaking into several vehicles and stabbing an eyewitness.

According to the KSP Post 2, two individuals explained that they had seen Mr. Mayes breaking into cars. As soon as Mr. Mayes realized the two had seen him, he fled the scene on foot. The two witnesses then proceeded to chase Mr. Mayes. Once the two had caught up to Mr. Mayes, they attempted to subdue him around the intersection of Winding Oaks Drive and East Jefferson Davis Highway. While in the process of trying to restrain Mr. Mayes, one of the witnesses was stabbed and Mr. Mayes fled the scene on foot once again. From there, a KSP Canine tracked him to a residence located on East Jefferson Davis Highway where he was taken into custody at approximately 3:25am without further incident.

The victim of the stabbing was identified as 18 year-old Zachariah D. Farlow of Elkton, KY. Farlow was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center for treatment. At the present time, he is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as a result of his injuries.

Charles A. Mayes has been charged with 1st Degree Assault, 1st Degree Burglary, and 3 counts of Theft by Unlawful Taking from an Auto. He was taken to the Todd County Detention Center.

KSP Detective Lloyd Ray is the investigating officer. He was assisted at the scene by KSP-Detective Scott Smith, Trooper Derek Smith, Trooper Jerry Knight, Sgt. Greg Jones, Sgt. Michael Williams, K-9 Unit Trooper Mark Combs, the Elkton Police Department, Todd County EMS & Rescue, and Air Evac.
