Though iSurf News caught up with Derek in an “Our Town” article a couple of weeks before he left, (click here to view the article in its entirety: Math-Teaching Strongman, Derek Stone), he was kind enough to send us video footage of his participation in the competition once he returned, which is attached below this article. He also took the time to tell us a little about his experience, as well as how he did overall.
“The trip out went very smoothly with no problems at all,” said Derek. “I got there, checked on my weight, and was right where I needed to be. So I ate a good supper, drank plenty of water, and went to bed. When I woke up and weighed-in officially, I was 3 pounds under the limit—the lightest I had ever weighed in for a competition. So that was awesome.”
In regards to how he did in the competition, Derek explained that, "I had a couple great finishes. I finished 6th in the yoke and 3rd in the frame, and finished within the top 20 in everything else except the medley. I actually took a very bad placing in the medley, which dropped me out of the top 5. It’s definitely a mistake I will learn from. Overall—in a field of tough competitors—I came in 9th, and 9th out of 60 is something I can be proud of…for now. But I have no intentions of stopping there."
iSurf News would like to congratulate Derek Stone on his accomplishment in Reno and would also like to thank him and his wife, Morgan, for letting us know about the video attached below.
