OWENSBORO, Ky. (8/30/13) -- Being a working mom means there’s never a dull moment, as any mother can tell you, and at least one woman has found a way to do just that.
Stacy Edds-Ellis is the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Owensboro Community & Technical College, a mother, a wife, and a blogger. Her blog, “Spoonful of Life,” tells the story of her daily life as a working mother, and offers humorous anecdotes about her three year-old son, Cooper, her husband, Clay, and their twelve year-old cat, Miss Kitty.
Edds-Ellis said her inspiration for the blog came from a woman who blogged her own feelings about her sister’s diagnosis and painful bout with cancer. Edds-Ellis was “moved by the rawness” the woman shared to her followers and although she wasn’t in the same situation, she decided that she wanted to show the realness of her life, too. Edds-Ellis thought that the world needed more realness.
“With Facebook…and even face-to-face conversations, we typically only share the pretty things that are kosher, and acceptable,” Edds-Ellis said. “We don’t share the messiness of everyday life.”
The blog became a collection of her “rambling” thoughts, a way of documenting her life, and a digital scrapbook for her son. Edds-Ellis balances being a leader at work, a wife, and a mother daily, but she is learning to appreciate what is in front of her.
“Most days I feel so overwhelmed, but all of that is what’s in your spoonful of life, and you have to be thankful it,” Edds-Ellis said.
“Spoonful of Life” has been on the web since 2012 and has since collected 4,200 unduplicated views with 550 followers not only in America, but Canada and the United Kingdom. With the rather large numbers of traffic coming to her page, her family and friends were suspicious that their antics would make it to her page. Her husband even said, “Stacy, you should keep your thoughts in your head sometimes”. But, she said that most of the responses have been positive on social media, with posts from mothers and families that they are going through the same things.
“Spoonful of Life” takes a humorous angle in every story, whether it’s something her son shouldn’t have repeated or celebrating Miss Kitty’s birthday and learning lessons from the feline family member.
“If you can’t take a laugh at yourself, you’re probably in a sad state,” Edds-Ellis joked.
Edds-Ellis is a mother, a wife, a friend, a sister, a cousin, and a blogger and she said she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’m staying focused, enjoying the moment,” Edds-Ellis said.
