FRANKFORT, KY (1/25/12) – – Representative Myron Dossett, R-Pembroke (9th District) announced that a resolution which he co-sponsored urging the U.S. Department of Labor to withdraw its proposed rule limiting youth under 16 years of age from working on farms has been passed out of the House Agriculture and Small Business Committee and will move on to the full House for passage.
“This is once again the federal government’s attempt to add burdensome regulations onto the citizens that will simply lead to less time spent with our youth to teach them responsibility, work ethic and something that can’t be taught from a book, practical common sense,” said Rep. Dossett. “I worked on the farm in my young teen years, something I’m proud of and it’s how I purchased my first car.”
Also discussed in the committee meeting were new regulations facing farmers who use H2A farm workers.
“This new regulation which I oppose and have spoken to our Federal delegation about will put additional expense on our farmers who chose to stagger out when their hands arrive to work on local farms,” added Rep. Dossett. “It’s these type of regulations and similar one such as EPA regulations on coal and controlling dust on farms that are strangling our citizens and our businesses. These decisions being made by individuals who have no practical business experience, and it’s why our economy is in the state it’s in and why I will continue to fight these types of ideas because we need to do all we can to create a business friendly environment which will lead to job opportunities for Kentucky.”
