Russell BillHENDERSON, Ky. (12/5/17) — Officer Bill Russell has been named Henderson Police Department’s Employee of the Month.

HPD reported Russell went above and beyond his call of duty, while several miles away from home.

He was out with his family going to eat dinner, when he took the wrong turn in the pouring rain. As he was driving across a bridge, the off-duty officer notices a vehicle stopped on the road and a man leaning over the bridge railing.

Russell drove past and worked his way back to the man, while other drivers went past.

“Bill took it upon himself to stop and try and help this man, while his family called 911,” HPD reported. “Bill talked to the young man and found that he had just lost two people close to him recently, and was contemplating killing himself, because he felt he had no more to live for.”

HPD said Russell used skills learned through a 40-hour crisis intervention team training.

“His actions represent the type of man and officer he is,” HPD Spokeswoman Jennifer Richmond said. “The Henderson Police Department along with the city of Henderson should be proud of Officer Russell’s actions. His actions kept a family from losing another loved one that day.”
