US (2/1/12)—Many US citizens turn to the latest technology and the most up-to-date meteorologists for the latest weather forecast 364 days a year, but on that one remaining day, people all over the nation turn to a fuzzy subterranean sage of somewhat epic proportions.
Yep, it’s nearly time for the 126th annual Groundhog Day prediction and celebration held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
On February 2nd, 2012, thousands of people across the country will be watching live or tuning in to find out what the legendary Pennsylvania groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, is going to “prognosticate” for the early winter or (possibly) spring quarter of 2012.
As the long-stretching and internationally known legend states, if the bard-like groundhog sees his shadow upon emerging from his hole on the second day of February, we’re in for 6 more weeks of bad, winter weather. On the contrary, if he doesn’t see his shadow, we can all expect an early spring.
While Phil’s official prediction is initially spoken in “Groundhogese”—a language understood only by the President of the Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle—it is translated for the world soon after.
Though the legend is steeped in the early nature-based beliefs of old world Europe, it has become (for the most part) a whimsical celebration that reminds us of a simpler time.
Plus, when asked how often Phil’s prediction is correct, Punxsutawney officials explain that, “100% of the time, of course!”
