MORTONS GAP, KY (2/3/12) – The Mortons Gap Fire Department has been awarded a regional grant to standardize all of Hopkins County's fire station foam supplies. This grant will provide both Class A and Class B foam. The grant will also equip all departments with the latest in foam application equipment.
 
The federal portion of the award is $82,935 and the local portion is $9,215. In total, there will be $92,150 spent. The Mortons Gap Fire Department will be adding 570 five gallon buckets of foam concentrate to the county's inventory. This is enough foam concentrate to mix with and treat over 500,000 gallons of water that can be used to fight fires anywhere in Hopkins County.
 
Initiated by the Hopkins County Fire Chief Association and hosted by the Mortons Gap Fire Department, this grant is designed to protect the citizens of Hopkins County and critical industries. With economic times as they are, it is important for the Hopkins County Fire Service to have the needed tools to protect the economic interests of the county.
 
Firefighting foams are used to enhance the firefighting capabilities of plain water. With new construction materials and new manufacturing processes, plain water is no longer enough to provide effective knockdown of a fast moving fire. Firefighting foams maximize the available water carried by fire trucks. Most importantly, firefighting foams provide a quicker extinguishment of fires and provide a safer working environment for our county’s firefighters.
