MADISONVILLE, KY (2/4/12) – Greetings readers, allow me to tell you a story.
The day is starting early. Everybody at the office has been working feverishly to meet a deadline. What is a boss to do?
The obvious answer is to give them a paid week in Maui. Not all bosses are as I am though. Well, if that boss is in Madisonville he has a second choice. Agreed, it is a distant second but if no one knows about Maui the boss still looks good.
Madisonville Donuts. I can already hear the tired office staff, “Oooh donuts, big whoop. Is there chocolate? I’ll have the chocolate.”
Doughnuts can be done in a variety of ways and Madisonville Donuts doughnuts are good. The office folks will be appeased.
Now that the boss is off the hook, let us talk of one of the six most important meals of the day. Breakfast. Madisonville Donuts has a few offerings that should be tried.
A little hungry? Ever had a kolache? You probably have and didn’t realize it. For lack of a better term, a kolache is a pig in a blanket. Reason would state that anybody who can make good doughnut dough should be pretty good at other breads. Reason would be correct. Imagine if you will a smoked sausage link with jalapeño’s and cheese encased in slightly dense dough. I will place a warning here. If you suffer from food addiction stop imagining now or you are toast. Sorry. They have multiple varieties and you may wish to go ahead and order more than one (You’ll end up doing it anyway).
Very hungry? Imagine if you will (see above warning) a tall, flaky croissant. Pretty huh? Now slice it gently in half. Insert egg, cheese and… bacon? ham? sausage? grilled chicken? (Your choice they have them all) Now imagine that first warm bite. How amazing does it taste? Want to come close to doubling that sensation? Why not go out and actually try one of those babies instead of just sitting here fantasizing about food.
I may seem to be hyping this a bit but I tend to be excited when I discover a really good food, whatever variety, produced in town. I would give the kolache 7.5 out of 10 donut holes. I would give the croissants an easy 9 out of 10 bear claws. I haven’t yet tried the breakfast burritos or biscuits. I may use those to help with the kolache withdrawals if I ever give up the habit.
For some price might become an issue. The prices are reasonable. My wife and I eat there for under 10 dollars with drinks. This is good as well as bad in that my wife and I are up to a 3 day a week habit.
So boss or not you may want to give them a try. They are open daily 5-2 and have a drive thru.
The staff is efficient but works with the patience that comes from often waiting for us to answer the eternal questions. Chocolate or jelly filled? Ham or sausage? Just one or a whole dozen? Am I really going to share these?
Until next week,
T. Butero
