Dem 11 12MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/12/17) — About 300 gathered Saturday at the Rosenwald-Smith Multicultural Center for the 42nd Annual Gov. Ruby Laffoon/Gov. Steve Beshear Democratic Dinner.

Democrats appeared to be optimistic and enthusiastic about the local Primary Election next year.

Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear served as keynote speaker. Several county leaders spoke including former Kentucky Sen. Jerry Rhoads, who recognized veterans, and Hopkins County Democratic Party Chairwoman Pat Vincent, leading the evening program. The talented Margie Bowman sang the National Anthem.

“The people of the Democratic Party are alive and well,” Vincent said. “We represent the working men and women and support the pensions that our workers have worked hard to get.”

Five outstanding leaders were inducted into the Hopkins County Democratic Hall of Fame that included the late Linda Todd, the late William “Buddy Rodgers, Tim W. Thomas, Parvin Gibbs and Joe Ed Wiles.

Democratic Committee member Savannah Rodgers said the annual dinner is a significant event for Hopkins County.

“This is a good time to meet people, mingle,” Rodgers said. “We have several people in the house who may or may not have filed already, and they’re feeling out the atmosphere and getting ready to make that big step.”

Hopkins District Judge David Massamore was at the event, saying he has filed for re-election. Circuit Clerk Karen McKnight confirmed she also is seeking another term.

“I enjoy it, and I love the job,” Massamore said.

Judge-Executive Donnie Carroll indicated he would not be running for the office, noting former jailer Joe Blue is looking to fill the seat in addition to Republican opponent Jack Whitfield, who currently serves as a Hopkins Fiscal Court Magistrate.

Hopkins County Commonwealth’s Attorney Kathy Senter will seek re-election. The word is that Republican Karey Roy will challenge her for the seat. There was no indication whether a Democrat plans to run against Sheriff Matt Sanderson, who filed the paperwork Nov. 9. Democrat Lydon Logan plans to run for jailer against current Jailer Mike Lewis, who was appointed to the position this year to finish out Blue’s term. The deadline to file for the Primary is Jan. 30.

The son of previous Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, a Hopkins County native, took the podium and spoke about issues surrounding the commonwealth.

“He was not only an amazing governor, but he is an amazing dad … and, he’s an amazing granddad and still gets on the floor to play with the grandkids,” Andy said, referring to his father.

The attorney said he loves serving courageously for the people of Kentucky.

“This job has given me purpose,” he said, especially regarding families and children.

Beshear said his office is working to ensure child abusers and sex traffickers are prosecuted, and is continuing the effort in training agency workers across the state to recognize the signs of abuse. He also is working to hold pharmaceutical companies responsible for the opioid crisis across Kentucky through lawsuits.

“It makes this community and every community safer for your children and mine,” he said.
