West Side Story

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (11/16/17) — Hopkins County Schools combined high school production of “West Side Story” will premiere at the Glema Center for the Arts Friday and Saturday.

Revered as one of the greatest love stories of all times, the musical based on the book by Arthur Laurents includes music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The production was inspired by William Shakespeare's play, “Romeo and Juliet.”

For the first time ever, both high school arts departments have come together for this production. Madisonville North Hopkins High School co-director Debbie Iverson said they even opened the opportunity up to the three middle schools in the district.

The combined effort will feature a cast of 50 to tell the tale of not-so-friendly rival gangs.

The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid-1950s. It explores the rivalry between teen street gangs, the Jets and Sharksteenage.
