HOPKINSVILLE, KY (2/7/12) – A power outage took area residents by surprise Monday night. According to Mark Lindsey with Pennyrile Rural Electric, the outage began at 8:32 p.m. and was restored less than one hour later at 9:20 p.m.

A large portion of Hopkinsville was in the dark during that time. General Manager of Hopkinsville Electric System, Austin Carroll says all of their more than 13,000 customers were in the dark. Lindsey says that 4,518 PRECC customers were affected by the outage. Some of the PRECC areas impacted included Happy Hollow, Great Oaks and a portion of Christian County toward Cerulean.

Authorities agree that the outage was caused by equipment failure. Carroll says the problem occurred with a breaker in the TVA substation at Kelly. He says once the breaker was isolated, power was then switched to another breaker and restored to customers.

Carroll said the latest incident was unrelated to the January 20 outage that occurred at the same substation. He said this incident was due to equipment failure whereas the earlier event was related to lightning.
