Children Work with Missoula Children’s Theatre Residency

secret gardenHOPKINSVILLE, KY (2/8/12) – Auditions were held on Monday for a production of The Secret Garden that will show on Saturday. Approximately 50 roles were available to local students who will take to the stage this weekend.

Students chosen for the show have been working between four and five hours each day after school to prepare for the show. The Missoula Children’s Theatre has been coming to our community for many years to work with students. Executive Director of the Pennyroyal Arts Council, Carol Barta says the mission of the Missoula group is to take the children to a new stage in the art of theatre.

In addition to the theatre instruction, Barta says the emphasis is on important life lessons, “To build their self-esteem, to learn how to get along with people because the environment is very structured because they have so much to accomplish in such a short period of time.” Barta encourages the community to come out Saturday and support the kids who have worked very hard for the show. She adds, “Anyone who’s looking for a good family fun night, this is a good time to come and young people may find it intriguing enough that they’ll become more interested in theatre.”

The Secret Garden is billed as a retelling of a story of hope and celebration. Mistress Mary Quite Contrary embarks on a journey from India to her uncle’s home in England. Along the way she makes friends with Canadian Geese and colorful Giant Bugs that Rock.

The performance is set for Saturday, February 11 at 7 p.m. at the Alhambra Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults and are available at the L&N Depot or at the door. The project is presented by the Pennyroyal Arts Council with the co-sponsorship of Toyota of Hopkinsville. For more information call 270-887-4295.
