HOPKINSVILLE, KY - Portia LaVerne Henderson Word, age 82, of Hopkinsville, KY passed away at 10:50 AM Monday, January 30, 2012 at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes.

Mrs. Word was born December 26, 1929, in Christian County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Thomas Warren and Bess Harrison Henderson. She had taught at Lacy Elementary School for 37 years, retiring in 1991. Portia was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where she was the pianist, and the Christian County retired teachers associations. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winbern “Buddy” Word in 2006; her daughter, Jo Lynn Word in 1979

There are no immediate survivors.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home with Rev. Glenn Farmer officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home from 11:00 AM until time of services at 1:00PM.
