solar eclipseWESTERN KENTUCKY (7/1/17) — NASA is predicting that 300,000 people will come to western Kentucky to experience the Solar Eclipse on August 21.  Many of these people will be family and guest of residents. Some will come to camp out and hotel rooms are sold out in the area.

Kentucky Transportation officials are concerned about traffic in the area. Officials predict that people may try to travel down that morning and try to find a place to park and watch.  Of more concern is people trying to time a trip down I-69 or I-24 to just happen to be in the right spot when the eclipse occurs.  Officials are aware of a 50 vehicle caravan (including two buses) planning such a maneuver.

Transportation officials have not shared what their options are to prevent such bottlenecks.

Regardless, significant disruptions in traffic flow will be possible throughout the day.  People coming to western Kentucky to view the event should plan to arrive at least the day before.  Area residents and businesses will want to consider the possibilities and plan accordingly.  Even back roads could be congested.

It promises to be a tourism bonanza - benefiting hotels, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and camping areas.  It also affords the possibility for huge headaches.
