PINEVILLE, KY (2/4/12) – Everyone enjoys a good story, especially from someone who really knows how to tell it.
Master storytellers will converge on Pine Mountain State Resort Park for Storytelling Weekend, March 16-17. This first meeting of what is expected to become an annual event will be a two-day spectacular of stories, workshops, and entertaining showcases.
There will be two evening storytelling concerts featuring master storytellers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The wonderful variety of stories presented by the professional storytellers will thrill listeners. Expect to be captivated by their homespun humor, Appalachian folktales, Jack tales and inspirational stories. All stories will be suitable for the entire family. The event promises to be a great weekend of relaxation, complete with laughter, learning, and interaction with the region's best storytellers.
The weekend offers three windows of concurrent sessions and attendees will be able to select from among nine storytelling workshops on Saturday. Topics include audience participation, using space in the support of the telling experience, the use of props for creative telling in the classroom or on stage, secret ingredients for good storytelling stories, and text to telling translation. The workshops are a unique opportunity for learning from renowned teachers in the art of storytelling.
Attendees may sign up to tell a five-minute story in the Friday night “Story Slam” and a 10-minute story during one of two scheduled Story Swaps. Listeners will then vote to select one teller from the Story Swaps to perform a 10-minute story during the Saturday evening Storytelling Concert.
Package prices are $130 (single) and $180 (double), and include accommodations for two nights, two evening meals, and admission to all weekend programs and activities. The non-package admission fee for Saturday workshops and evening storytelling concerts is $35 for adults, $10 for youths 13-17, and children 12 & under is free. The non-package gate fee to the evening storytelling concerts only is $8 per person, per evening; 12 & under are free. The park is located near Pineville, Ky. Take Exit 29 off I-75 and travel south on 25E approximately 35 miles.
