Central City Girl Awarded for Life-Saving Act

DestinAArmourMUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY (2/2/12) - Destin Armour, age 10, was presented with a letter from Governor Steve Beshear, and a Citizenship Award from Central City mayor, Barry Shaver, for a courageous act she recently performed.

Destin's mother, Dina Crabtree, told SurfKY reporters, "My daughter goes to her brother's scout meetings because her dad picks them up and they usually go to El Braceros after." Dina explained that during one scout meeting, a scout's mother, Kim Woodall - a Register Nurse, came and taught the troop first aid and the Heimlich maneuver.

During a News Years Eve party hosted by one troop leader and scout parent, Destin Armour was able to use the skills she picked up at her brother's Boy Scout meeting.

According to Dina Crabtree, "Jackson was eating pretzel M&M's and got choked. The boys thought he was joking and Destin said she saw his eyes and knew he wasn't joking. That's when she did the maneuver."

Ironically, the child who received the Heimlich maneuver was the son of the RN who taught the kids first aid.

Kim Woodall contacted the Governor's office, which resulted in the recognition of Destin Armour's courageous life-saving act.
