Central City, Hopkinsville Receive Recreational Trail Grants

trail bambooFRANKFORT, KY (2/21/12) – Central City and Hopkinsville are among 38 Kentucky communities and Kentucky-based agencies that will develop recreational trails or trailhead facilities with over $1.8 million in federal grants announced last week by First Lady Jane Beshear.

Central City will receive $54,735 for its Central City Trailhead Facility Project, said State Rep. Brent Yonts, D-Greenville. A total of $62,500 will go to Hopkinsville for its West Side Walking Bridge Project.

“Recreational trails promote healthy bodies, healthy tourism and healthy local economies,” said Yonts. “I am very thankful for First Lady Jane Beshear’s work toward obtaining these grants, and I am eager to see the results of these funds in Central City, Hopkinsville and communities across the Commonwealth.”

The grants dollars are provided by the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreational Trails Program (RTP). Kentucky’s Department for Local Government will administer the Kentucky RTP grants, which must be matched by fund recipients.

Recipients of the RTP grants include cities, counties, and state and federal agencies that are developing trails or trailhead facilities for hiking, bicycling, inline skating, equestrian, off-road motorcycling and all-terrain vehicle use.
