govjob corp with prunty embryFRANKFORT Ky. (11/13/17) — State Rep. Melinda Gibbons-Prunty invited Muhlenberg Job Corps Business Community Liaison Jodi Ashby and student Azhanée McKnight to a bill signing ceremony Oct. 24 at the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort. The ceremony was for the signing of House Bills 227 and 309, both sponsored by Gibbons-Prunty.

"It was an honor to receive that invitation for myself, but I was overly excited when I found out I could bring a student along as well. This is an experience she will carry with her forever," Ashby said.

Gibbons-Prunty, a strong supporter of the Muhlenberg Job Corps Center, served as keynote speaker at the center's August graduation.
"She also has made it a point to interact with the students," Ashby said. "It's empowering for the students to build relationships with their elected officials in this area, and understand more about their government and their ability to make a difference."

Gibbons-Prunty explained that House Bill 227 is "a physical therapy compact bill that secures Kentucky's State Board of Physical Therapy a place at the table in creating a nationwide compact that will oversee the ability of physical therapists to practice across state lines incompact states."

House Bill 309 is a combination of domestic violence bills HB 309 and SB 86. HB 309 outlines how/when victims of domestic violence may get out of a lease and change their locks as well as allowing landlords the right to ban perpetrators from their properties. SB 86 was rolled into HB 309 to change a mandatory report of suspected abuse to the Cabinet to a mandatory referral to a local domestic violence shelter and the providing of educational materials to help victims realize their situation and their options for dealing with abuse.
While at Frankfort, Ashby and McKnight met Gov. Matt Bevin, many state representatives, and some state senators including Sen. C.B. Embry.

"I got to see first-hand how these officials work to serve the communities within their district, and how they interact with individuals to get input that influences the way they approach government actions. I am very thankful to Rep. Gibbons-Prunty for including me in that day and offering me those experiences," said McKnight.

In addition to witnessing the signing of House Bills 227 and 309, Ashby and McKnight were invited to the ceremonial signing of House Bill 524. This bill, sponsored by State Rep. Addia Wuchner of Boone County, is designed to promote access to help for victims of human trafficking.
