Kentucky State Police Trooper Jerry Knight said that a Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Deputy was making a traffic stop in the Dollar Store parking lot. As the officer was approaching the vehicle, the driver put his vehicle in reverse and attempted to run over the deputy striking the deputy's cruiser.

Knight said the officer then fired his weapon at the suspect. The suspect was then transported to Muhlenberg Community Hospital.

Knight said a female passenger in the car was also taken to the hospital but did not specify the cause.
