beshear6 300PADUCAH, Ky. (7/4/13) – The following is a statement from Governor Steve Beshear in regards to actions taken on the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.
“I am extremely disappointed by today’s letter from the Department of Energy, indicating that the agency is issuing a Request for Offers (RFO) seeking proposals concerning the future of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP).
The RFO creates another delay – at least six months -- in the process of determining the future of the facility and its 1,100 workers. The RFO also holds open the possibility that the DOE would allow a business to purchase the tails without mandating use of the facility, which is wholly unacceptable. The purchase of the tails must go hand-in-hand with continued use of the facility. Finally, the letter seems to indicate plans to place the facility under surveillance and maintenance, which runs counter to our request that the DOE begin immediate cleanup operations.
My primary objective for this facility is to find a new economic development opportunity to redevelop the PGDP site and create and preserve jobs, and to protect the public by promptly beginning cleanup efforts.
I will be strongly expressing these concerns to Energy Secretary Moniz during our meeting this Monday, and will further relay those concerns later that day to the White House.”
