UK-UofL Rivalry Heats Up This Week: Why Bleed Red, When You Can Bleed Blue?

ul uk 300LEXINGTON, KY (9/9/2013)—The University of Kentucky football team will play the rival game against the University of Louisville Saturday. The in-state battle is all the talk of Lexington, with UK fans celebrating “Louisville hate week” to gear up for the big game on Saturday.

“To beat Louisville is one of our biggest goals,” UK Quarterback Jalen Whitlow said. “We kind of have a good gist of what this game means to our program.”

While the Big Blue Nation emphasizes how big of a rivalry this game is, the team is trying to stay focused.

“I won’t say that I hate Louisville, but there is a dislike factor. I mean, I’m not a fan of the red team,” Whitlow said. “The rivalry just puts a big emphasis on beating those guys this week.”

While the coaching staff and team are well aware of the challenge ahead of them, Coach Mark Stoops knows that the Wildcats are going to make great strides this week so that they can deliver on the field come Saturday.

“Louisville is good. They are physical, they are fast, they are good across the board,” said Stoops. “It’ll be a tough match up but if we improve as much as we did between weeks 1 and 2, between weeks 3 and 4, then I think we will do great things on Saturday.”

Stoops doesn’t plan on shying away from the fact that this is a rivalry game, but the plan is to play this game just like any other one.

“Every week is important and our players need to know that,” Stoops said. “We know that it’s a big game but we also know from the first game that trying to get them hyped up and amped up isn’t the answer.”

The biggest compliment that Stoops can give UofL going into the rivalry match on Saturday is that they play very confident and very hard.

“That’s football…that’s good coaching,” Stoops said. “You’re always trying to be strategic. All I ask them to do is prepare everyday the best that they can.”

The football team will hit the practice field this afternoon to prepare for the rivalry game and the fans that are expected to be there on Saturday.

“I expect to have a full house, I anticipate there will be no tickets left,” Stoops said. “Our fans have not disappointed us so far, and we need them to be there full swing on game day.”
