Brushy Fork Creek’s Annual Spring Festival

brushfork 300CROFTON, Ky. (4/17/13) – Owners Paul and Patricia Ferrell moved to Crofton Kentucky back in 1974, where they purchased 100 acres of woods. Brushy Fork Creek Gallery is located on the rolling hills of oak woods in western Kentucky.

“We bought 100 acres of unclear land that nobody knew who it belonged too. Then we bought a sawmill and went to work,” laughed Paul Ferrell, owner and artist of Brushy Fork Creek. “There was never a real direction about making pottery or woodturning. We just wanted gardens and orchards and to live in the woods. But this worked and people liked it.”

Paul uses the native woods to create pieces of turned wood such as; salad bowls, wine tops and ikebana’s. “The wood-turning started back when I was restoring antiques for museums and collectors and well I needed to start turning some things, so that’s how that got started. That’s how I have been making part of my living since 1974. We were farming for a long time but it just wasn’t cutting it, we just couldn’t compete with other farmers. This is a semi-organic farm, we aren’t purists… We try our best to be as organic as possible. We just try to get a nice rotation and composting. ” Paul does one craft show a year and sells most of his work in their gallery, two shops across the United States and in Europe.

Patricia works with high fire stoneware clay to make functional pots of all sorts. “Tricia actually started out as a wood-turner, then in 1980, we went to a craft show and someone asked her if she would like to throw a pot…. So she threw a pot. Then the lady asked her if she would be interested in learning how to make pottery. Tricia spent two weeks learning how to become a potter. However, we are both basically self- taught,” stated Ferrell.

Brushy Fork Creek in Crofton will be having their annual Spring Festival Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21.

Saturday’s events will be from 10:00am – 5:00pm and Sunday’s Event will be from 1:00pm-5:00pm. This year’s guests artists will be: Randy McCurdy (Fleur de Glas), Tracie Griffith Tso (Chinese Brush Painting), Steve and Beth Shafer (Blacksmithing and Felting), Kelley Chapman (Sticks and Stones Critters), Patricia Zulkolsky (Gourd Art), Melanie Henderson (Wood-turned Pens), Brushy Fork Creek Students and other surprise guests. “We try to get different people every year and surprise guests that we don’t advertise because we want visitors to see something different because this isn’t Wal-Mart, we are always making efforts to making something new and pleasant for people every time they come out here. It really pushes us because we can repeatedly make things to sell but it is fun and challenging and innovating to create something new,” expressed Ferrell.

While engaging and walking around, you can treat yourself to the Pit Stop BBQ and have drink from Bravard Winery (Saturday Tasting).

Don’t worry, if you miss this event, Brushy Fork Creek is open all year so you still have a chance to check out their gallery. Just make sure you call ahead of time so someone can be there when you arrive.

Brushy Fork Creek is located on 1550 Pleasant Green Hill Road, Crofton Ky. 42217.
