eaa aircraft 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (5/14/13) – There is nothing more thrilling than that first airplane flight. Many Muhlenberg young people, ages 7 to 17 will get their chance to soar above the county they call home this Saturday.

"Our pilots' group we have at the Muhlenberg County Airport is actually a chapter of The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), which is headquartered in Oshkosh, Wisconsin," Tammy Carter of the group told SurfKY News.

EAA Chapter #1184 will be hosting an event called Young Eagles Day this Saturday, May 18 at the Muhlenberg County Airport just off the 189 Bypass in Greenville.

Carter told SurfKY that "this event is a great time to give a child between 7 and 17 a free flight (no adults may go) to help foster a possible interest in aviation. If the child is lucky enough to sit in the front seat, they may get to help fly since most planes have two sets of controls in them. Registration will begin at 8:30 and continue until 12:30, with flights to begin at 9:00. The rides are on a first come first serve basis." Carter noted.

Carter noted that the rides are given by licensed pilots who donate all of their time and expenses for the day and are supported by many people on the ground that register and escort the kids to the planes. The Young Eagle program has flown over 1.7 million kids worldwide. “Our chapter started participating in the program in 1997." she said.

"EAA is a worldwide organization. The Muhlenberg EAA chapter is part of a worldwide group that is known for its participation in all forms of aviation, whether flying kids, possibly building their own airplane or just getting together to be with other pilots. To get more details log on to www.youngeagles.org or www.eaa.org." Carter added.

SurfKY News plans to attend this weekend's event and bring our readers complete details on this once in a lifetime thrill for young Muhlenberg Countians.
