Muhlenberg 4-H Penguin Plunge Splashes Up Record Cash

penguinplunge1 - CopyCENTRAL CITY, Ky. (2/24/14) What would bring well over one hundred Muhlenberg county residents to the Central City Fitness Center's outdoor pool on a late winter day?

The 4-H Penguin Plunge!

This annual event helps provide the county's more than 600 eligible low-income children with backpacks full of healthy food to get them through each weekend.

Last year over 500 children qualified for the program.

The good news is Muhlenberg county residents stepped up to the ledge, and took the plunge to help feed those in need.

There were soaking wet clowns and cows, caped crusaders... and even local pharmacy chain owner Ron Poole as The Bachelor's Juan Pablo Poole.

When all the belly flops were over, the participants splashed up a final total of $11,230.28, according to Mackenize Pogue, Muhlenberg County Extension Agent for 4-H Youth Development.

Area churches, businesses, civic groups and area students all joined together for the cause.

Muhlenberg County Sheriff Curtis McGehee served as one of the three judges.

"It's encouraging to see this many people come out and take part in such a worthy cause. This is what being a part of Muhlenberg County is all about.. helping those in need," McGehee said.

Central City Mayor Barry Shaver was also on hand to help judge the Penguin Plungers, and getting splashed occasionally for a great cause.

"This is probably one of the most important yearly events we have in the county. They say it's good to give until it hurts. But the people of Muhlenberg County always give until it feels goods. It makes me proud to be a part of Muhlenberg County," Shaver said.

Muhlenberg County Circuit Court Clerk Cameron Laycock was judge number three, and didn't mind getting a little wet from some cannonball divers.

"It's all in good fun, but it's such an important cause. I can't think of a more important issue than for the residents to work together to help feed hungry children," Laycock said.

The Muhlenberg County 4-H Teen Club has focused on the "Food for Kids Backpack" program for over a decade.

The plunge accepts donations to participate and all proceeds go directly to their backpack program, according to Pogue.

You don't have to get wet to help.
