MCC Staff Shares Good News with Muhlenberg Chamber

MCC Dr Jay ParrentDr. Jay Parrent told the Muhenberg Chamber that since 2009, $200,000 in scholarships have been handed out to Muhlenberg students.CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (4/14/14) — The Greater Muhlenberg Chamber of Commerce was treated to some very good news regarding secondary education Thursday, April 10, at the group's monthly meeting, held at the Central City Convention Center.

Dr. Jay Parrent and Dr. Deborah Cox, members of the MCC Admissions Department, shared several impressive statistics regarding the success of MCC and especially Muhlenberg County students.

Parrent, who is the MCC Chief Student Affairs Officer informed the audience that MCC is now one of the top 150 colleges in rankings from the Aspen Institute.

"This is a very impressive ranking," Parrent said. "This rating is based on student output, graduation rates, and how students perform. It is very accurate and something our Muhlenberg students can share great pride in."

Cox told the gathering that Muhlenberg County can also take a lot of pride in the results of the Felix E. Martin Jr. Scholars Program.

"We have had a total of 34 students in the Martin Scholars program since 2012," Cox said. "Another five students will finish up in May, thanks to the program. I just attended a meeting with admissions directors from every college in the state. They were amazed to hear about the success of the Martin Scholars program. This is very special, and very unique to Muhlenberg County. This certainly speaks highly of your values."

Parrent added that the scholarships handed out can really change lives.

"Something like this program can change the trajectory of someone's life," Parrent said. "I hope that you all will continue to be ambassadors of the Martin Scholars program for us in the Muhlenberg County community. The graduates are outstanding people of all ages."

MCC Deborah CoxDr. Deborah Cox of MCC spoke about the Martin Scholars and other successful programs at the college.

Parrent said that in a typical year, 85 Muhlenberg County students receive funding from the community college.

"Since the MCC School Counts program's launch in 2009, we have awarded over $200,000 To Muhlenberg County students," Parrent said. "This will cover the cost of their tuition. It's intent is that students will not have to worry about tuition costs. That number of $200,000 is very exciting."

After the presentation, Parrent told SurfKY News that the future looks bright for MCC students throughout the area, including Muhlenberg County.

"I think our health program will continue to grow here at MCC," Parrent said. "This is an area that has great potential as far as students finding great paying jobs. We're also really excited to be working more closely with Ken Robinson, President of the Muhlenberg Alliance for Progress. There is a lot of potential for this partnership, because you never know what new business may move into the area next."
