Brescia to Honor Three Alumni

brescia 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/19/13) - During the 2013 Alumni Homecoming festivities this weekend, three alumni will receive the University’s highest award, the Distinguished Alumni Award. These three alumni are Mary Danhauer ’76, Al Mattingly ’69, and Kathryn Raymer ’93.

Since the inception of this prestigious recognition in 2000, Brescia University has awarded more than 50 alumni with the Distinguished Alumni title. This award was created to honor those graduates who exemplify the elements that encompass “The Brescia Difference: Respect for the Sacred, Devotion to Learning, Commitment to Growth in Virtue, and Promotion of Servant Leadership.” Because of the breadth and scope of their life’s work, the magnitude of their impact on the regional, national, and often international scene, and their examples of service and leadership, alumni who receive this esteemed honor have distinguished themselves among their peers.

mary danMary Danhauer graduated from Brescia College in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. During this time, she was a member of the Mount Saint Joseph Ursuline community. After graduation, Mary taught high school science while also attending Murray State University and receiving a MSN in Horticulture. She then went on to teach at a high school in Nebraska. While there, she became certified as an EMT and volunteered on the Rescue Squad. She was the first nun and the second woman on the squad. Eventually, she returned to Owensboro and taught three years at Owensboro Catholic and began work on another master’s degree; a Master’s in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner from Vanderbilt University.

The next several years were spent in Owensboro working at the Health Department, Physicians Affiliated Care, and Dr. Vora’s office of primary care. She then opened her own practice.

All this time, as a very active member in the Catholic Church, she conducted a lot of work with social justice issues and learned deeply the needs of the poor. After facilitating several JustFaith programs, she went on an immersion trip to the Diocese of Owensboro’s sister diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica. This one week changed her life and she felt called to return to Jamaica to work in the Diocese medical clinics. Mary spent the next three years seeing patients at three different clinics and visiting the home-bound. Mary says her heart was “profoundly touched by the joy of the people. They are people who have nothing, share all and are so at peace!”

After her service in Jamaica, Mary returned to Owensboro to work at the McAuley Clinic. It went from a very quiet clinic with no regular provider, to a clinic with extended hours and two providers. This clinic sees patients without medical cards or insurance and is where you can find Mary during the week.

Mary contributes much of who she is today to the professors at Brescia, the Ursuline Community and to those who are poor and on the fringes of society.

“The care and concern of those professors for excellence and giving 110%, helped to form me deeply,” Mary says. “The challenge of living in the Ursuline Community with strong, dedicated women who stand on the side of Justice for the downtrodden has been the fire that lit my soul to work for Peace and Justice Issues. Living among the Jamaicans taught me a way to live in peace and harmony with Mother Earth.”
