KENTUCKY (1/27/12) – What one location is the #1 tourism destination for Kentucky? Hint, it is also the #4 tourism destination for Tennessee. Answer – Land Between the Lakes (LBL). The 170,000 acre National Recreation Area with 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline attracts 1.7 million visitors each year.
Ninety percent of LBL is forested and there are activities for most outdoor adventurers.
CAMPING – LBL offers full scale camping opportunities from pitching a tent beside a secluded lake to full service RV hookups.
HUNTING & FISHING – With 250 days a year of hunting seasons and surrounded by one of the world’s largest man-made bodies of water, LBL offers sports men and women many opportunities.
TRAILS – LBL sports over 200 miles of trails. Whether you want a quiet hike and enjoy nature viewing or seeing the natural beauty from the back of a horse there are trails for you. Or, perhaps you want to see nature in a blur from an ATV or motorcycle. There are trails for you as well.
Bill Lisowsky is Area Supervisor for LBL. Lisowsky points out that there are 1,500 campsites available and that there are many opportunities to learn about nature – individually and as groups. LBL is managed by the US Forest Service and public education is a large part of their mission. Lisowsky says that LBL is continuously improving with 2011 upgrades to the Golden Pond Target Range funded in part by the NRA. The Golden Pond planetarium has been modernized and upgraded with a laser light show. The 17 Trails Bridge has been upgraded as has Energy Lake Campground.
The Forest Service is working on two bio-mass projects in Lyon and Trigg Counties. It is also working to complete 10 miles of hiking/biking trails along Hwy 68/80.
LBL describes itself as the center of a $650 million dollar tourism industry. Most of the tourism industry is small businesses. LBL is offering seminars to local businesses to grow their businesses. The next session is February 18 at the Golden Pond Planetarium and Visitor Center. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. It is an all-day program with several notable speakers.
