FRANKFORT, KY (1/27/12) – U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield, (KY-01), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power released the following statement in response to the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future final report that was released today. The Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy has scheduled a hearing next week to further discuss the report.
“I look forward to the hearing next week on this issue and diving deeper into the Commission’s report. However, pulling the plug on the Yucca Mountain project, as the Obama Administration and Senator Harry Reid want to do, is not the answer.
In light of the current $15 trillion federal debt, I’m not sure why this Administration and Sen. Reid insist on spending even more money trying to find alternatives to something that is already in place. We have already spent $15 billion in the development of the Yucca Mountain project, and we should not spend even more money researching alternatives when we know there are none.”
