FRANKFORT, KY (2/27/12) — On Tuesday February 21st, the Capitol will be hosting the annual Boy Scouts at the Capital Day. Thousands of Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venture Scouts and their Families will invade the Capital city for a grand assembly which will take place at 11:30am on the front steps of the Capitol.
Scheduled speakers include Lt Governor Jerry Abramson, Senate President David Williams, Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo, State Representative Ben Waide and State Representative Mary Jane King.
This is the second year for the event coordinated by Waide with the three major Boy Scout Councils in the State. Last year a simple invitation went out via email with only three weeks’ notice and there were 1500 people who showed. This year, there is much more notice and lots more activities. The boys will enjoy tours of the Capitol, Governor’s Mansion and the History Mobile which will be parked by the Capitol. In addition, the Frankfort Trolley bus will be shuttling people from the Capitol to the downtown historical sites as well as Daniel Boone’s Grave site.
“It is a great opportunity for our kids to experience our Capital up close and personal” said Waide, a Hopkins County Republican. “That might include some of the hundreds of girls across the state who are Venture scouts. Venturing is the High Adventure branch of the Boy Scouts that serves boys and girls ages 14-18.”
The event will run from 9am to 3pm with a grand assembly on the steps of the Capitol at 11:30am. Children are eligible for an educational day excuse from school if they contact their school Principal. Over 2000 people are expected to attend.
