LEXINGTON, KY (3/1/12) – The Bluegrass is invited to join the University of Kentucky Percussion Group (UKPG) for a free public concert of two works at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall. Under the direction of James Campbell, the UK Percussion Studies Program has won the prestigious Percussive Arts Society’s International Collegiate Percussion Ensemble Contest four times, a record matched by no other institution.
This UKPG concert not only highlights the university's talented performers, it features a newly commissioned work by one of UK’s prestigious alumni, Jordan Munson, an associate of the Donald Tavel Arts and Technology Research Center in Indianapolis.
Munson penned a new work that incorporates live percussion with live sound design and film in "Circle of Wills." The composer says his work, "…comments on the ability to manipulate memories to alter perception. In our minds we can change the way things look and sound or we can erase them altogether. This work offers a colorfully surrealist take on the topic. It is an attempt to illustrate this phenomenon by pushing a singular aural and visual event to its limit."
The concert will also feature another new work that is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of American music pioneer John Cage. Cage's 1944 painting "Chess Pieces" contained a musical score as its subject and was only rediscovered and "played" for the first time in 2005. As a musical composition, "Chess Pieces" is old-school Cage, abstract and occasionally abrupt, but with a still-traditional pianistic feel. UK alumnus Brian Nozny, assistant professor of percussion at Dickinson State University, recently arranged "Chess Pieces" for the world-renown percussion group Nexus.
UKPG is a smaller chamber group housed at the School of Music in the UK College of Fine Arts. Members are drawn from the UK Percussion Ensemble, nationally recognized for its excellence and innovative programming. UKPG performs demanding percussion literature written for economic forces.
