WESTERN, KY (3/12/12) – A couple months from now, everyone who lives on or near the Ohio River will have the opportunity to help keep our waterways and riverbanks clean as part of a regional group project. An annual anti-pollution effort to keep the mighty Ohio clean comes every June and volunteers are again being asked to donate their time and energy.
The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) is the primary sponsor of River Sweep 2012. Established in 1948 as a mechanism to promote less pollution in the Ohio River Basin, ORSANCO’s member states include Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. The cleanup effort spans the entire shoreline of the Ohio River and its tributaries and is the largest event of its kind.
“The Ohio River Sweep is very important because for a few hours on one day volunteers can help make a difference in the appearance of this great natural resource,” said Jeanne Ison, the project’s director. “The Sweep has grown so much in the past few years, we’ve been able to expand the project to tributaries and feeder streams of the Ohio River.”
This year’s River Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, June 16, 2012 and is intended to target trash and debris along the 3,000 miles of shoreline. Other sponsors include the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Kentucky River Authority, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and the West Virginia Make It Shine Program.
No matter where you reside along the Ohio River, anyone wanting to get involved in this year’s River Sweep should visit www.orsanco.org or call (800) 359-3977. You can search for site locations and get acquainted with area coordinators and other volunteers from around the Ohio River Basin who share your commitment. Each volunteer will receive a free shirt commemorating the event.
