KENTUCKY (4/4/12) – Northwest Kentucky health demographics and statistics were compiled and evaluated to produce a system of rankings. According to the 2012 County Health Rankings, Northwest Kentucky counties are neither the healthiest nor the unhealthiest in the state.
The new rankings list the health of almost every county in America by using a standard measurement which takes into account health outcomes and health factors. Health behavior, clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment are used to determine the rankings.
Several new measures like how many fast food restaurants are in a county and the levels of physical activity were used in this year’s rankings. The rankings were produced by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
In the Tri-county area, Henderson County ranks 72nd, Union County ranks 53rd and Webster County ranks 78th in the state. There are 120 counties in Kentucky.
According to the study, Oldham County is the Kentucky’s healthiest county while Owsley County is the least healthy. Other rankings from around the state include: Daviess County ranks 23rd, Hancock County ranks 11th, Hopkins County ranks 66th, McLean ranks 93rd and Muhlenberg County ranks 81st.
“The County Health Rankings confirms the critical role that factors such as education, jobs, income and environment play in how healthy people are and how long we live,” said Jodi Mitchell, Executive Director of Kentucky Voices for Health, a coalition of Kentuckians and organizations concerned with our state’s health.
The rankings indicate that the majority of the unhealthiest counties reside in southeastern Kentucky.
“The county rankings in the report indicate that there is room for improvement in rural Kentucky. It is important that we continue our work to ensure that all Kentuckians have access to quality care, not just in the healthiest counties, but across Kentucky,” said Mitchell.
