gavel book 300FORT CAMPBELL, KY (11/18/12) – The General Assembly’s Interim Joint Committee on Judiciary will be traveling to Fort Campbell on Monday, state Rep. John Tilley, its co-chairman, announced.

“Bringing a key committee representing both the House and Senate closer to our community is important,” said Rep. Tilley, who represents Christian and Trigg counties. “In this case, it's vital to our region because we’ll be on post at Ft. Campbell, focusing on service members and veterans.”

Those scheduled to attend include Eric Sherman, who serves as state liaison for the southeast region with the U.S. Dept. of Defense. He will discuss the USA4 Military Families Program, a federal initiative that looks for ways to help those who serve and their families in such areas as consumer protection, education, childcare, legal matters, absentee voting and employment opportunities for spouses.

Also scheduled to speak are Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. and Justice Will T. Scott, who chairs the Veterans Subcommittee of the Kentucky Access to Justice Commission. Joining them are Jefferson County District Court Judge David Holton and Connie Neal, both of whom are involved with a pilot project known as Veterans Treatment Court. They will discuss how military personnel and veterans interact with Kentucky’s judicial system.

The meeting’s final guest is Colonel David Thompson, who is director of the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs. He will cover behavioral health issues affecting veterans, service members and their families.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Central Time at the Fort Campbell Family Resource Center, which is located at 1501 William C. Lee Road. The media are invited to attend, though they will need to contact the base’s public affairs office to be escorted in. Those wanting to know more can call 270.798.9966 or 270.798.3025.
