FRANKFORT, Ky. (12/21/12) – Gov. Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from today until sunset on Sunday, Dec. 23, in honor of Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, who passed away earlier this week from respiratory complications. The honor is in accordance with a presidential proclamation.
Sen. Inouye, of Hawaii, was President pro tempore of the United States Senate and was the longest serving member of the body. Sen. Inouye represented Hawaii in Congress from the time it became a state in 1959. He was initially elected as the state's first House member for two terms and then as a senator for nine terms. Sen. Inouye also served in World War II and earned a total of 16 medals and citations for his service, including the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor.
Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute.
