FRANKFORT, Ky. (2/25/13) – Kentucky’s high performing schools are saving 30 percent or more a year in utility costs and are national models of innovative design, sustainable practices, and educational innovation. To demonstrate proven results of the high performance process in Kentucky’s schools, the Department for Energy Development and Independence (DEDI) and the Kentucky National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project are hosting a sustainable schools workshop at the Marriott River Center in Covington, March 13-14, 2013. Attendees will learn first-hand how high performance design in Kentucky’s schools has impacted student learning and established new standards for energy efficient school design.
The two-day workshop will demonstrate proven results of the high performance process in Kentucky’s schools. Sessions will be led by recognized professionals, including school officials, architects and engineers, who have successfully designed, built, operated and maintained high performance school buildings. Speakers will examine strategies for high performance building renovation and operation. Experts will share the impact of student energy teams on district savings as well as present research currently being conducted on the impact of building design on student learning. A tour of Turkey Foot Middle School in Kenton County is scheduled for March 13.
Turkey Foot Middle School is a national model of a high performing school, which has greatly reduced its energy usage by incorporating features such as natural lighting, insulated concrete building envelope, geothermal heating and cooling and an energy efficient kitchen. Turkey Foot Middle School also features a 443 kW solar array which covers the school roof and canopy walkway.
Kenton County School District has a proven track record of integrating high performance building strategies in the design, planning, and operations of its schools, as well as incorporating energy education into student learning. As a result, Kenton County reduced its overall energy consumption district-wide by more than 15 percent in 2012. Thirteen of its 18 school campuses are currently certified ENERGY STAR and student energy teams are actively involved in reducing energy consumption.
Attendees of the High Performance Schools Workshop will be offered continuing education credits through the American Institute of Architects (AIA); Kentucky Effective Instructional Leadership Act (EILA); Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers; and Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA).
