KENTUCKY (3/30/13) - A couple of years ago, I listened to a teleseminar that had a guest speaker by the name of Lisa Nichols. She told an amazing story about how she was a single mother who had a very difficult life. She lacked self-confidence and self-worth. Her life seemed hopeless. She eventually decided that she wanted more out of life for her and her child. Now, she has become a successful author, motivational speaker, and life coach.
During the free teleseminar, she shared an exercise that she used when she began her healing process. I was blown away by it! I tried it myself and there is so much power and release in it. This exercise from Lisa Nichols’ book titled, “No Matter What”, is what I want to share with you this week.
The Mirror Exercise*
This exercise is about getting in front of the mirror and spending time alone. You strip yourself down to just who you are (not your label or job title).
There are three sentences that you say to yourself while looking in the mirror. The first one is:
(Your name), I’m proud that you….
Then you finish the sentence. What are you proud of yourself for? Have you accomplished a goal that you set for yourself? Have you gotten yourself out of an abusive relationship? Are you working on getting your life together? Have you given up an addiction? Start now and go back as far as 20 or 30 years. Celebrate yourself during this time.
The second sentence is:
(Your name), I forgive you for….
Finish the sentence. This may be difficult but remember we are only human. When I done this exercise I stated that I forgave myself for not standing up for myself, for allowing present moments to drift by due to my anxiety, and for trying to be perfect. Start at this moment and go back as far as 20 or 30 years.
The last sentence is:
(Your name), I commit to you that…
Finish the sentence. For me, I committed to myself that I will do my best, one day at a time, to take care of me. I committed to love myself and to enjoy my own company.
I love this practice and have shared it with some of my family members and friends. They have reported to me that it has helped them as well. I hope it is as freeing to you as it is for me.
Look into your own eyes and say, “Yes, I am a good person.”
