FRANKFORT, Ky. (5/9/13) – U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield (KY-01) today announced that Sarah Bickett, a senior at Union County High School in Morganfield, has been named the winner of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition.
“I offer my enthusiastic congratulations to Sarah Bickett for winning the 2013 Congressional Art Competition,” stated Whitfield. “Sarah is an extremely talented artist, and I am proud that her painting, ‘Home Is Where the Heart Is,’ will represent Kentucky’s First Congressional District in our nation’s Capital for an entire year.”
“Living on a farm, in the open hills of the bluegrass, I am surrounded by the hard work and beauty I capture in my unique rendition of ‘Home Is Where the Heart Is’,” stated Bickett. “I can truly say there is no place like home.”
Bickett’s artwork will now be on display in an area of the Washington, D.C. Capitol complex known as the Cannon Tunnel - a walkway connecting the House office buildings with the U.S. Capitol and Capitol Visitors Center. Members of Congress, congressional staff and countless visitors travel this corridor daily, enabling Bickett’s artwork to be viewed by a truly nationwide audience.
Sarah is the daughter of Jim and Jane Bickett of Morganfield, Kentucky. She is the student of Rebecca Goodman, an art teacher at Union County High School. Bickett and a guest will be invited to attend the Congressional Art Competition Reception on Capitol Hill being held on June 26th, 2013.
Elijah Ervin, a sophomore from Union County High School was named first runner-up. His artwork will be displayed in Whitfield’s Washington, D.C. office. Elijah is the son of Robert and Laura Ervin of Morganfield.
Kaitlyn Steward, a junior at Union County High School was named second runner-up. Her artwork will be displayed in Whitfield’s Hopkinsville office. She is the daughter of Tony and Dana Steward of Uniontown.
The final winner was determined by a combination of Facebook voting and a panel of local art experts who judged the artwork on various criteria. Over 4,000 people participated in the Facebook voting. All of the artwork is available on Whitfield’s Facebook page at facebook.com/RepEdWhitfield.
