WICKLIFFE, Ky. (5/21/13) – Family-friendly, hands-on activities related to archaeology, prehistoric technology and park history will be presented at Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site during the annual Family Fun Day on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Activities for kids to enjoy are Native American-style games and storytelling, making pottery and cornshuck dolls to take home.
Try your skills with Native American tools such as the pump drills, blow gun, spears, atlatls, bows and arrows, corn grinding and watch how stone tools are crafted by flintknapping.
Kids can find out how archaeology works with a simulated excavation box, displays of artifact analysis, mock survey and grid.
Visitors can take a tour of the archaeological museum, walk around the mounds and trails and learn what life was like for the Mississippian people..
COMPASS — Ballard County’s Healthy Direction Health Coalition and Cooperative Extension will have a “Plate it up!” exhibit. Fruits, vegetables and beverage samples will be available. Physical activity promotional items will also be given away.
In conjunction with Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site’s Family Fun Archaeology Day, the City of Wickliffe declares June 8 as “Discover Wickliffe Day,” and there will be vendors set up throughout Wickliffe selling crafts, food, antiques and other goods. Guests are invited to come to Wickliffe and explore the various activities and sites. Points of interest in Wickliffe are the Kentucky Veteran and Patriot Museum, the Fort Jefferson Memorial Cross and Park, the Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site and the Great River Road National Scenic Byway.
