LEXINGTON, Ky. (9/10/13)-People across the world are observing Suicide Prevention Day today, an awareness day meant to foster a commitment to preventing suicide.
According to Kentucky's Suicide Prevention Group's website, each year our state loses over 600 people to suicide. Every day there is an average of 5.7 suicide attempts in Kentucky. In 2009, Kentucky had the 23rd highest suicide death rate. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15 to 34 year olds in the state. In Kentucky, 64 percent of residents know at least one person who has committed suicide, yet suicide is one of the most preventable forms of death.
Today everyone is encouraged to wear yellow, the color of suicide prevention, and write the word 'LOVE' on your arm. This is a way to show those around you that may be suffering from suicidal thoughts that they are not alone.
If you or someone you know is considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
