OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/26/13) - Daviess County native Hal Miller celebrated his ninetieth birthday yesterday afternoon surrounded by his closest family, friends, and fans. Although the World War II veteran said "90 is not as old as it used to be," he is "just glad to be here."

Folks from Madisonville to Indianapolis, Ind., traveled to the Owensboro Area Museum of Science History to enjoy cake and refreshments in celebration of Miller's birthday. A few city officials including Judge Executive Al Mattingly and Commissioner Charlie Castlen were also in attendance. Hallie McCarty, Miller's granddaughter, said she was pleased with the turn-out.

"My grandfather has done so much for the community and this is just a really good opportunity for people to come out and show their appreciation," McCarty said.

Karen Porter is one of Miller's daughters. She claims that she, as well as her two sisters, has followed in their father's footsteps by holding many positions involved with community service. (Porter credential's including serving as the executive director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and her current responsibility as the executive director for the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.)

"It is because of the way we were brought up," Porter said. "I learned the importance of customer service growing up and that has helped me in every position I have held here in the community."

Hal Miller served in the 297th Combat Engineers and was at Normandy, as well as the Battle of the Bulge. He and his brother built the Windy Hallow Camp grounds and race track, although the track is no longer run by the family. Miller does still own the Windy Hallow Restaurant located on Ky. Hwy. 81.

Miller told SurfKY News he is "proud" of those who spent yesterday afternoon in honor of him.

"I see a lot of people I haven't seen in years," Miller said. "We still have a lot to talk about; mostly about the old times."
