nichols 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/19/13) — Joan Bowles Nichols of Madisonville received Kentucky State University’s Distinguished Alumni Award at the Homecoming Founders’ Day Convocation Oct. 11.

The university presents this award to a Kentucky State University alum, who has distinguished himself/herself in the area of politics, business/education, entertainment or human services.

Nichols had a distinguished career in education.

Nichols spent 37 years as an elementary school teacher, working at Branch Street School and West Broadway Elementary School. She also served as a substitute teacher for 10 years.

She is a member of Eastview Missionary Baptist Church, and was featured in an article in the Hopkins County Historical Society’s annual yearbook.
