FRANKFORT, KY (1/17/12) – Senator Joey Pendleton, D-Hopkinsville, attended the State Agriculture and Rural Leaders Legislative (SARL) Agriculture Chairs Summit that was held in Washington D.C. this past weekend (Jan. 6-8).
“Agriculture is a very important topic to me, as I am a farmer and have been actively involved in agricultural activities for many decades,” said Senator Pendleton, vice chair of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference. “Opportunities such as these allow me to express my concern for Kentucky farmers to those at the national level.”
Senator Pendleton has a history of promoting the interests and well-being of employers and employees alike in the field of agriculture. He is a staunch advocate and proponent for legislation that addresses the concerns and needs of agriculture. Additionally, he serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee and the Tobacco Settlement Agreement Fund Oversight Committee.
SARL is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the roles of agriculture and rural development leadership in all 50 states, Canadian provinces and U.S. territories. SARL works collaboratively with the Council of State Governments and the National Conference of State Legislatures to host this annual Summit which addresses the critical issues and challenges that agriculture and rural communities face.
The Legislative Agriculture Chairs Summit is the number one meeting for legislators whose major focus is agriculture and rural communities. It is the only conference of its kind for state and provincial policy-makers.
“Without the conferences such as SARL, the economy would suffer and supply of food would diminish,” said Senator Pendleton. “It is of utmost importance that I raise awareness of the vitality of agriculture to the success of both Kentucky and the United States.”
Pendleton has served in the State Senate since 1993. He represents the 3rd District, which includes Christian, Todd and Logan counties.
