CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (9/24/12) – Vanessa E. Lyons, MSN, RN, CNOR is a contributing author for Perioperative Orientation Resources: Your Guide to Orientation, Recruitment, and Retention for the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN).
Lyons is the Perioperative Staff Development and Technology Coordinator for the Perioperative Services Department at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. She is active in AORN, holding offices at the local and state levels and serving on the National Committee for Education for AORN.
As a member of the National Committee for Education, Lyons contributed to the release of Perioperative Orientation Resources: Your Guide to Orientation, Recruitment, and Retention. This guide provides an integrated orientation program that enhances delivery of safe care and validates the value of orientation for the management team. Orientation programs are fundamental for any patient safety initiative in a health care setting but these programs vary extensively between states, hospitals, and even specialty areas within the hospital. Perioperative Orientation Resources: Your Guide to Orientation, Recruitment, and Retention identifies the areas that are most vulnerable to error and emphasizes system changes in those respective areas.
AORN is a non-profit membership association based in Denver, Colo. that represents the interests of more than 160,000 perioperative nurses by providing nursing education, standards and clinical practice resources—including the peer-reviewed, monthly publication AORN Journal—to enable optimal outcomes for patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures. AORN’s 40,000 registered nurse members manage, teach and practice perioperative nursing, are enrolled in nursing education or are engaged in perioperative research. AORN defines and advances best nursing practices for surgical patients by researching and distributing scientifically based recommendations.
Lyons is also pursuing a PhD in Nursing with a certificate in Healthcare Informatics at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. She is married to Evan Lyons and has three children: Mariah, Thomas, and Laya Lyons, all of Murray.
