CALLOWAY COUNTY, KY (9/30/12) – The Murray-Calloway County Hospital Hospice program will be hosting a two-part educational event on Hospice care in April for anyone interested in the program or becoming involved. The event will be held Tuesday, Oct. 16 and Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the MCCH Education Building on the corner of Eighth and Elm streets.
Murray-Calloway County Hospital Hospice provides support and care to meet the unique needs of those with life limiting illnesses in Calloway County and offers an Education Program twice each year. The program helps the community in several ways. First, it provides training to anyone wishing to become a Hospice volunteer. Second, it provides education to increase knowledge about caring for family and/or friends with life limiting illnesses. Finally, it increases awareness and understanding of Hospice, Palliative and End-of-Life care for medical professionals and the community.
Presenters include active volunteers, the Hospice chaplain, the Hospice Social Worker, a community minister, a nutritionist, Hospice nurses and families previously touched by Hospice care. Topics include:
• History, Philosophy, Services, and Reimbursement
• Pain and Symptom Management
• Spiritual Care
• Bereavement Care
• Nutrition and Hydration at End-of-Life
• Ethics and Advance Directives
Volunteers are crucial to the Hospice Program. They help meet the needs of Hospice patients and their families in many ways including sitting with patients and running errands. Some volunteers work in the office to assist with clerical duties like mailings, filing and more.
There is no cost for the program other than a $25 fee for non-hospital employees who want CEU credit. Nurses who complete both days of training will be eligible for 15 CEUs. Refreshments will be served but lunch is not provided. For more information or to register for the sessions, call MCCH Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Charlotte Rhodes at 270-767-3670.
