CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. (2/18/13) – On Friday, February 15th the Calloway Middle Science Bowl Team was named champions of the regional competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.The students traveled to Paducah Kentucky at the WKCTC campus to participate in a quick recall type format against schools from across the state. The Lakers began the day with victories over Cobden, Illinois (110—16), Paducah Middle (84—8), and West Kentucky Home School (64—48).
In the next game the Lakers defeated Highland Latin School from Louisville by a score of 76—42 and in the championship game they defeated North Henderson by a score of 30—20. This win now sends the Laker team to Washington D.C. to compete in the National Science Bowl where they will face teams from around the country. The Lakers will represent the state of Kentucky at this national competition.
This marks the third regional championship in the past four years for the Lakers. In last year's National Competition the Lakers received the Excellence in Science Civility Award and they had a top six design document on the lithium ion battery-powered car.
The Laker Science team members are Marshall Thompson , Joza Mikulcik, Chance Roberts, Michael Okuda, Coach Mitch Hultman, Claire Umstead and Coach Scott Pile.
