CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. (5/2/13) – Southwest Calloway Elementary recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new industrial composter. This will allow the expansion of recycling efforts at the school to include compostable materials. Using the new piece of equipment, students will have an opportunity to experience the science concepts of soil making first hand.
The purchase was made possible by a $1,000 grant from Pella. AgConnections, another community business partner with education, will become a consultant on the project offering advice on maintaining the proper balance of nitrogen and carbon and providing a speaker for classes during their soil unit in science studies. The ultimate goal is to build a greenhouse where students can experiment with different soil types and conditions for growing plants.
