CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. (6/13/13) – On Saturday, June 1st two Calloway County Middle School students traveled to Atlanta, GA to compete in the National History Bee. At the event, Griffen Sheridan and Braxton Bogard matched their knowledge against students from around the country on various history topics, including both World and American history.
Last January, both CCMS students competed in the 70-question multiple choice Online Regional Qualifying Exam (ORQE). Only the top 120 scores from each of the 35 regions across America advanced to the next stage of competition. Then, in April, they competed in the Regional Finals in Nashville, TN.
This tournament was comprised of head-to-head buzzer competition against students from several states. Griffen placed in the top ten in this competition while Braxton’s score placed him very near to the top ten. Both of their scores were high enough to qualify them for the National History Bee.
At the National level, Griffen and Braxton competed against 410 of the brightest history students from across the United States. Both competed well against very tough competition. Ultimately, Griffen placed in the top 35% of the entire field of middle school students. They represented their school very well at the National level.
The Calloway County Middle School History Bee team is coached by Mitch Hultman and Scott Pile.
