OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/17/13) – On Thursday, May 16, SurfKY Region 2 News Director J.L. Graham was honored to visit the students of Majesty Christian Academy in Owensboro, in a follow-up from a series of articles written by the students.
Earlier this year, Mr. Graham visited Majesty via request from a teacher, Lynn Reid. Reid had informed him that the students from her class were very interested in Journalism, and that one student, Braden Spicer, was interested in Investigative Journalism, Graham’s specialty.
Graham visited the school and set up a mock crime scene, giving the students a chance to use investigative skills to solve the crime. Much to Graham’s amazement, the youths solved the crime very quickly. Afterwards, Graham and Reid spoke about the possibility of the youth writing a weekly column. Each youth ended up doing one column. SurfKY News looked at the statistics of each youth’s column, and found that one had gotten more reads than any of the others.
Thursday, Mr. Graham revisited the school. Once there, he awarded Hannah Brown a plaque, as her article had been read over 3000 times. Braden Spicer was awarded a medal as most likely to succeed in investigative journalism. The other students were each given medals as a result of the unnaturally high number of hits that each column had gained.
The entire list of students honored were…
Mr. Graham stated, “I was extremely impressed with these youth. These kids did an amazing job at writing articles that were very relevant to our local readers. It would not be a surprise to me if at least two or three of these kids actually grew up and became active in the news industry. It was a blessing for me to see these kids get so excited about writing.”
SurfKY News would like to thank Majesty Christian Academy and Mrs. Lynn Reid for giving us an opportunity to impact the lives of these children in a positive manner.
